Early life
Born in Bergisch Gladbach, North Rhine-Westphalia, Hummels grew up in a football family; his father Helmut was a former professional goalkeeper. He joined Borussia Mönchengladbach's youth academy at age seven and progressed through their system.
Path and career
Hummels made his Bundesliga debut for Mönchengladbach in 2007 before transferring to Borussia Dortmund in 2008, where he developed into a world-class defender. He won two Bundesliga titles with Dortmund (2011, 2012) and reached the 2013 Champions League final.
He joined Bayern Munich in 2015 and won five Bundesliga titles and the DFB-Pokal before returning to Dortmund in 2019. Hummels earned 120 caps for Germany and was a key player in their 2014 World Cup victory in Brazil.
