How it is calculated
- The year is simply the current year minus the number you enter, so it answers the calendar-year question rather than counting exact days.
- Centuries are counted the traditional way, where the 20th century runs from 1901 to 2000.
- Decades are named by the tens digit, so 1965 belongs to the 1960s.
- Years before 1 CE are shown in BCE form, allowing for the absence of a year zero in historical usage.
Where this is used in the real world
- Planning an anniversary feature for a newsletter, podcast or social account.
- Working out a round-number commemoration for a business, club or building.
- School projects that compare a period with the present day.
Good to know
- This counts whole calendar years, not exact days. For a date-accurate gap use the days-between tool.
- An anniversary number and an age can differ by one until the anniversary date has passed in the current year.
