How many days between two dates?

Pick two dates and see exactly how far apart they are: total days, whole weeks, the calendar difference in years and months, and how many of those days were weekdays. The count is inclusive of the start date and exclusive of the end date, which is how contracts and notice periods are normally counted.

How it is calculated

  • Both dates are converted to a day count and subtracted, so leap years and month lengths are handled automatically.
  • The calendar difference (years, months, days) counts whole calendar months first, then the remaining days, borrowing from the previous month when needed — the same way ages are counted.
  • Weekday and weekend totals are produced by walking the span day by day and testing each one against the seven-day cycle, so they are exact rather than an estimate of five sevenths.
  • Swapping the dates gives the same magnitude with the opposite sign, so you can measure backwards as easily as forwards.

Where this is used in the real world

  • Notice periods, rental agreements and payment terms that are quoted in days.
  • Project planning: how many working days are left before a deadline.
  • Travel: the length of a trip, or a visa stay measured in days.
  • Personal milestones: how long you have been in a job, a home or a relationship.

Good to know

  • Weekday counts do not know about public holidays, which vary by country and region. Subtract holidays yourself if you need true business days.
  • The count assumes a full day for each calendar day. Time zones and daylight-saving shifts change the number of hours in a day but not the number of days.
  • The calendar difference in months is ambiguous by nature: from 31 January to 28 February is one month in most conventions, and this tool follows that convention.

Questions people ask

Is the end date included?

No. The total is the number of nights between the two dates, which is the standard for durations. Add one if you need to count both the first and last day.

How are working days counted?

Every day in the span is tested against the weekly cycle and counted as a weekday if it falls Monday to Friday. Public holidays are not deducted.

Can I count backwards?

Yes. Put the later date first and the result shows the same number of days with a note that the second date is before the first.
