Early life
Batt was born in 1927 in Wilder, Idaho, to a ranching family. He grew up in southwestern Idaho during the Depression and developed strong ties to agriculture and rural communities.
Path and career
Batt served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War, eventually reaching the rank of brigadier general in the Idaho National Guard. He was elected to the Idaho House of Representatives in 1960 and served multiple terms before his gubernatorial run.
As governor, Batt championed education reform and worked to balance environmental conservation with resource development. After leaving office in 1999, he remained active in Idaho civic affairs until his death at age 95.
