Their story
Who they were
Jane Powell was an American actress, singer, and dancer who appeared in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer musicals in the 1940s and 50s. With her soprano voice and girl-next-door image, Powell appeared in films, television and on the stage, performing in the musicals A Date with Judy (1948), Royal Wedding (1951), Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954), and Hit the Deck (1955).
Early life
Powell was born Suzanne Lorraine Burce on April 1, 1929, in Portland, Oregon. She began performing as a child singer on radio before moving to Hollywood as a teenager.
Path and career
Powell signed with MGM in 1944 and quickly became a leading lady in the studio's musical productions. Her soprano voice and wholesome image made her ideal for roles in A Date with Judy (1948), Royal Wedding (1951), Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954), and Hit the Deck (1955).
Beyond film, Powell performed on Broadway, in television variety shows, and on the concert stage throughout her career. She remained active in entertainment into her later years, appearing in guest roles and performing at nostalgia events.
